Activities in Glenorchy
Glenorchy is the gateway to Paradise and there is so much you can do in this stunning part of the world!
If you are looking for stunning mountain landscapes – Glenorchy should be top of your list! Head to the famous 'Red Shed' on the lakefront where the TSS Earnslaw Steamship used to drop off passengers from Queenstown. Drive a couple of minutes out of town towards Paradise and you’ll get stunning views of the Glenorchy Lagoon, with the Humbolt Mountains Ranges providing a stunning backdrop.
Head to Paradise to appreciate why it is so famous for filming – home to a lot of scenes from Lord of the Rings. The name gives away how beautiful this place is! The gravel road winds through beautiful beach trees, passing Diamond Lake and a beautiful guest house built in the early 1900's, Arcadia, and up to a stunning viewing point of the Dart River and beyond.
Go completely back country and ride a noble steed up the valley through various river crossings admiring the mountain views, or take it at a slower pace out in Paradise surrounded by impressive mountain ranges and Lord of the Rings scenery.
One for the kids or for your inner child! Feed the farm animals from little lambs to beautiful draft horses, and watch a sheep shearing demonstration.
You can hop on a jet boat and race up the Dart River, jump out of plane and get a birds eye view of the mountain ranges below, or go canyoning and jump into pristine clear pools and waterfalls!
If you fancy taking in the scenery at more of a relaxed pace, there are plenty of options to take a tour off-roading in Glenorchy and Paradise.
Being so close to Mt Aspiring National Park, Fiordland National Park and the Milford Sound - it doesn't take long to take in all the spectacular views by air!
If you really want to wind it down and put on your old trusty hiking boots, you are absolutely spoiled for choice in Glenorchy! From little walks where gold mining used to take place in the 1860's, to walking part of bigger tracks such as The Routeburn Track, one of the 11 Great Walks of New Zealand, you won't be disappointed!
Picnic and lunch
Glenorchy may be small but there are several little cafes and lodges that provide delicious food to dine in for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Or simply a takeaway for a picnic - you're spoiled for choice with picnic spots!
Take a journey through the stunning wilderness! Enjoy 1000 metres of exhilaration over 8 ziplines as you take a journey through pristine wilderness, following the curves and chasms of an alpine river. An unforgettable adventure and fun for all!

The views from the zip lines are amazing! Some fly you on top of the river. Guides are well prepared and professional. Equipment and zip lines are well maintained and safe. Short hike to the top of the mountain very doable for everybody. Not to miss!!!

Our family had a great morning zip lining with Paradise Ziplines. Our guides Dom and Mark were extremely professional and friendly. They provided excellent safety instructions and a shot practical training which gave us comfort that the activity would be safe (in particular for our children 11 & 10). There was a 15min walk to get to the first zip line on the way they provided commentary of the local area and points of interest on the track. The zip lining course was incredible with 8 zip lines totalling over 1km in length. We zip lined over some of the most spectacular scenery. We would highly recommend Paradise Ziplines to anyone.

We highly recommenced this while you’re in Queenstown. We drove ourselves to the meeting point at Glenorchy which took about 45mins along a very stunning scenic coastline. Take time to stop and admire the clear blue lake with snowy cap mountain in the background. From Glenorchy, the shuttle bus took 15 mins to the starting point. Our guides Norm and Shane were very professional, friendly and educational. You can leave your bags at the start and take your camera /phones in a zip up pocket. The 8 ziplines took about 2 hrs, over some of the amazing gorges and canyons.
